Food Waste Drop Off Site

A FOOD WASTE DROP OFF SITE survey was posted on the town of Seneca Falls website during the months of August through mid October 2017. Attached are the SURVEY RESULTS. Thank you to all who responded!

UPDATE and answers to your questions...

The location for the food waste drop off site is at the corner of Bridge and Ovid Streets in the Town of Seneca Falls. Dan Babbitt, Sr. owns the 13.5 acre site and is interested in composting the food waste. Dan plans to use the compost in his gardens on site and has expressed interest in hosting a community garden. There should also be enough compost to share!

Barb Reese is helping to coordinate the food waste drop off site and is in contact with the NYSDEC and Cornell Waste Management Institute. This planned site will follow operational criteria for a small scale composting facility that accepts no more than 1,000 cubic yards of organic waste per year.

Paper towels, napkins, and paper products can all be composted along with food waste. Wood chips from a local tree service company and leaves will be used as cover materials. While it’s best to drop off food waste during daylight hours, there is street lighting that will help if you must come at dusk.

NEXT STEPS – signage, registration, & compost caddies

Dan is setting up a drop off area with signage to be easily accessed from Bridge St. The next step is to register those who would like to use the site and also distribute caddies and transportation containers to those who want them.

It’s important that we know who is using the site so that we can communicate procedures and changes in operation that may be necessary.

We are unsure of a start date, but are hoping that we can collect and compost through the winter as long as Dan is able to access the composting area and cover materials are available. An additional email with a start date will be sent to all those who register. Kitchen caddies will be available after November 9th. For more information, email Barb Reese at barb.reese@gmail.com.
