The Heritage Area System (formerly known as the Urban Cultural Park system), established in 1982, is a state-wide system of designated ‘areas’ and ‘corridors’. The Heritage Area Program works in partnership with local governments and the private sector to enhance and revitalize historic areas of special natural, social or cultural significance within designated communities.
Seneca Falls is one of 18 Heritage Areas throughout New York State. The Seneca Falls Heritage Area focuses on the themes of Reform Movements and Transportation & Industrialization, highlighting the Village’s role in the development of the Women’s Rights Movement. The NYS Heritage Area System spans the state from the Great Lakes in upstate New York to the Hudson River Valley and Long Island. Each Heritage Area brings new life to their representative areas with a four-fold program of historic preservation, education, recreation and economic revitalization. The system is administered by the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
